One of the plants, which is associated with the Christmas is the mistletoe (Viscum L.). Why this hemiparasitic plays quite an important role in popular culture is not entirely clear. The custom of hanging mistletoe is most popular in Anglo-Saxon countries - probably it was taken from Celtic tradition. Cuting the mistletoe was one of the rites, which render the Druids. Mistletoe was supposed to bring prosperity and abundance and protect against evil forces also ensure a lasting love. It is believed that the Christmas tree (habit from the 17th century) replaced the custom of hanging mistletoe.

Jemioła to rodzaj obejmujący około 70 -100 gatunków.

Viscum is a genus of about 70-100 species of mistletoes. In Europe the most popular is viscum album. They are woody, obligate hemiparasitic shrubs with branches 15–80 centimetres long. Their hosts are woody shrubs and trees. Mistletoe takes from hosts mineral and water. The seeds are dispersed when birds (notably the Mistle Thrus) eat the fruit, and remove the sticky seeds from the bill by wiping them on tree branches where they can germinate.

Properties of mistletoe depend to a large measure from the host tree. Mistletoe is a component of drugs against atherosclerosis or hypertension. It is also diuretic and sedative. The plant increases the frequency of contractions of the heart, dilates blood vessels and reduces blood pressure. The medicinal raw material shall be obtained from the leaves and twigs, berries are poisonous.
